Together in truth and faith we learn and grow as God's family.

Sport Premium

PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of St Francis School and at least two hour sessions per week are dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.

There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. Furthermore, sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.

In April 2013, the Government announced new funding (Sport Premium) for physical education (PE), sport and physical activity to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision at School, for two years. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is being allocated to all primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision for PE and sport in schools.

In September 2017, the Government announced further funding (Sports Premium). Each school will now receive an additional payment of £16,000 [plus £10 per pupil] to improve the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Our budget allocation for 2023-2024 is £17,810.

We are using the Sport Premium to improve the quality of PE and Sport provision in the following ways in 2023-24:

  • buying into the Leeds Well Schools PE project to enable staff to work alongside Leeds Schools PE teachers to increase their skills and confidence when teaching PE, as well as developing city wide initiatives in Leeds
  • buying into ACES Education coaching and CPD program to provide quality PE lessons, as well as lunchtime and after school clubs when it is safe for external providers to offer these extra curricular clubs
  • buying into the Total Dance CPD program to enable all staff to work alongside specialist dance coaches to increase their skills and confidence when teaching dance.
  • procuring quality-assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE, sport and physical activity
  • providing cover staff to release teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • supporting external sports coaches to run competitions, and to increase pupils’ participation in school games competitions
  • using the funding to support regular sport tournaments, festivals and competitions for pupils of all ages
  • buying new PE equipment to use in our Early Years outside area and lunch time zoned areas, which are designed to engage and inspire more children to take part in sporting activities.
